7 Reasons Your Air Conditioner Isn’t Cooling

Are you breaking a sweat in your home? Has your air conditioner stopped blowing cool air? Here are seven possible reasons your air conditioner isn't cooling your space.

  1. The Thermostat Is Set Incorrectly. The first thing you should do if your air conditioner isn’t cooling your space is check your thermostat settings. Make sure your thermostat is using the “cool” function and that it’s set to an appropriate temperature. Most people find that a temperature range of 22 to 26 C is the ideal indoor temperature.

  2. The Air Filter Is Clogged. Did you know a dirty air filter can restrict airflow and prevent your air conditioner from effectively cooling your space? Cleaning or replacing the air filter could get your AC system back on track. Do this every one to three months to maintain optimal performance.

  3. The Condenser Unit Is Blocked. Most air conditioners have an outdoor condenser unit. If your AC is running but your indoor temperature isn’t lowering, the condenser unit could be blocked by debris, dirt or overgrown vegetation. Clear away any obstructions and clean the condenser coils to see if you can get your unit back up and running.

  4. There’s a Refrigerant Leak. Central air conditioners use a chemical called refrigerant to chill the indoor air. If your AC is low on refrigerant, it may not be cooling your space effectively. If you suspect a refrigerant leak, it’s best to call a professional HVAC technician to identify and fix the issue.

  5. The Compressor Is Faulty. The compressor is the heart of your AC system. If it’s malfunctioning or damaged, your air conditioner won’t cool properly. This issue is best left to a professional to diagnose and repair.

  6. The Unit Is Old and Inefficient. Over time, air conditioners lose efficiency and struggle to cool as effectively as they used to. If your unit is over 15 years old and struggling to keep up with your cooling needs, it may be time to consider upgrading to a more energy-efficient model.

If you’re unable to identify or fix the problem yourself, it’s wise to consult an HVAC technician from Don’s Heating & Cooling to ensure your air conditioner is repaired as soon as possible.
