When to Replace Your Central Air Conditioner

You depend on your central air conditioner to keep you and your family cool during Ontario’s hot and humid summers. The last thing you want is your cooling system failing during a heat wave. Rather than take chances, consider an AC replacement if any of these warning signs apply to you.

  • Your air conditioner blows warm air. If the air coming through your vents isn’t cooling your home, you may have a bad thermostat or refrigerant leak in the cooling system. Either way, it’s best to seek the help of an HVAC professional to determine what’s wrong.

  • Your air conditioner is old. The average lifespan of a central air conditioner is 10 to 15 years. Older systems are inefficient and risk leaking ozone-depleting refrigerant into the atmosphere. If your unit is more than 10 years old and facing a major repair, replacing it may be a better investment. Additionally, if you’re calling a technician regularly, your money would be better spent on a new energy-efficient model with a warranty.

  • Your air conditioner makes strange noises. Central air conditioners are designed to run quietly, but all models make some noise when operating. However, if your unit is making unusually loud or strange noises, don’t ignore it. Grinding or scraping noises indicate worn bearings or loose belts requiring immediate attention.

  • Your energy bills are increasing. If your utility bills go up without any obvious reason, your central air conditioner could be running inefficiently, working harder than it should. Your HVAC system should cost about 44 per cent of your total energy bill. An AC replacement is a wise investment if it starts exceeding this amount.

  • Your air conditioner is leaking. If you notice liquid leaking from around your central air conditioner, it’s cause for concern. It may be a refrigerant leak or moisture buildup, both requiring attention.

Preventative Maintenance

As with any appliance, preventative maintenance is an excellent way to keep your central air conditioner operating at peak efficiency and avoid an expensive repair. An HVAC technician can inspect and clean your air conditioner, identifying and correcting minor problems before they cause a breakdown requiring costly repairs.
